Starting a warband

Step 1: Get a warband roster

You may either download a roster or use the Warband Builder (WIP)

Step 2: Select a faction

All factions have a faction entry that contains all of the special rules, fighter profiles and weapons lists unique to that faction. The factions are:

After selecting a faction you must note down the faction name on your warband roster.

Step 3: Recruit fighters

Begin recruiting fighters from your faction entry by paying their recruitment fee, while following these restrictions:

  • The total cost of your warband cannot exceed 1000 gold coins.
  • Your warband must include at least 3 fighters, and no more fighters than is listed under ‘Warband Size’ in your faction entry.
  • Your warband must include one Leader. No more, and no less.
  • If a fighter has a number range listed next to its name, it indicates how many fighters of that type may be included in your warband. For example, a fighter with a range of 0–2 means you may only include up to two fighters of that type in your warband.

Step 4: Equipment

Purchase equipment for your fighters while following these restrictions:

  • A fighter can only use weapons and armour listed in their faction entry.
  • A fighter may be equipped with up to two melee weapons, one ranged weapon and a suit of armour.
    • A fighter can forfeit one melee weapon to wear a shield.
  • Any equipment marked with a cross (✠) may only be equipped by a Hero
  • Beasts cannot use any equipment, and their natural weapons are listed in their respective fighter profile.

Step 5: Finishing Touches

The Warband Stash

Any gold coin not spent on fighters and equipment are stored in the warband stash and may be used to recruit new fighters and buy new equipment during a campaign.

Renown

When you start your warband, your Leadergains 1 point of renown and may immediately make a characteristic increase or select a talent (see Renown). This represents the fighter's skill and notoriety prior to arriving in Mordheim, and will be explained in detail in the aftermath sequence.

Favor & Standing

Each warband has a faction standing that represents the relationship between the warband and their faction. The process of earning favour and rising in standing is explained in detail in the aftermath sequence. For now, set your warband’s favour to 0 and its standing to 'Disposable'.

Calculate Reputation

Reputation is an indication of how powerful and notorious a warband is, and is primarily used for bragging rights and underdog bonuses. When you start your warband, Reputation is simply the total sum of Renown from all fighters in the warband.
